Fennel has an edible fern like top with a mild licorice like taste. The mild taste makes it a great garnish for a variety of dishes. The bulb at the plants base is used in salads or may be steamed, braised or baked.

Sow outdoors in early spring following the last frost. The plants will need approximately 1 inch of water per week while in the growing season. Make sure to keep the weeds out. Fennel is a short lived plant but is great at reseeding. The seed heads turn brown when they are ready for harvesting. Fennel stalks should be harvested approximately 5 to 7 months after planting. Once the stalks have been removed the bulb can be cleaned and stored as well.
